Why is it we can get all teary-eyed when we see two wonderful people pledge to love each other through good times and bad at a traditional wedding ceremony – with these famous last words, “For richer, for poorer; in sickness and in health” – yet somehow we often don’t translate those same vows to the relationship we are meant to have with our Bridegroom Jesus in our walk of faith?
When things go wrong, instead of sticking it out or standing up for our Beloved, we tend to blame, pull away, and throw in the towel. We think, Yes, Lord, I will follow You no matter what. But when sickness comes and stays for a prolonged season, we can often distance ourselves from the One who can truly help us.
We are all lovey-dovey with God during the honeymoon period as newbie babes of the faith, but quickly get sullen and moody when those roaring good times turn out to be difficult and inexplicable.
And when we are suddenly short on cash due to a job loss or some financial disaster, we truly show where our loyalties lie very quickly. Is our attitude “in God we trust,” or is it very obvious that we put our faith in our own abilities, our stuff, or other people around us?
You know, there is going to be a wedding, a really big, fantastic wedding to end all weddings. We are to be the spotless bride. Are we ready to throw our arms around Jesus with complete abandon, trusting that He will be our Redeemer, our Provider, our Protector? If our attitude during the difficult, confusing, and awkward times is any indication, we have a long way to go!
Let’s recommit to a wholehearted relationship with the Lord. And pray for His grace to see us through the bad times.
