After experiencing chronic foot discomfort every morning for the last couple of months, I decided that my running shoes just might be the culprit.

I shared this information with my athletic friend Jana, and she told me all about this running shoe store where they find just the right shoe to correct any foot problems. She mentioned that it was highly likely I was running in ill-fitting shoes and that with a new, perfectly fitted version, I would be back to normal in no time.

Having the proper gear is important if you want to run without injury. Same goes for being suited properly if you want to run the race of faith without injury to your soul and spirit.

Let’s take a look at what the Bible says about getting your gear on:

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand” (Ephesians 6:12-13, NIV).

First of all, we have to know that the battle we fight isn’t a physical one, one that happens in the natural realm. It’s a spiritual battle that we are fighting.

Then, if we read further in verses 14-17, we learn about all the pieces of this spiritual suit that we need to clothe ourselves with on a daily basis:

  • Belt of Truth
  • Breastplate of Righteousness
  • Feet fitted with the Gospel of Peace
  • Shield of Faith
  • Helmet of Salvation
  • Sword of the Spirit (Sword of the Word of God)

All this gear is carefully worn as a means of defense against the devil and his destructive powers. With our spiritual clothing firmly in place, we stand a better chance at victory over the temptations of the flesh, the taunts of our enemies, and even the wickedest of schemes from Satan and his minions.

So don’t forget to suit up. Pray Ephesians 6:12-17 over yourself every day.
